Energy suppliers and the energy grid

This lesson is one in a series that prepares students for an energy audit of their school.

During this lesson students are introduced to the national grid and learn about how electricity is distributed from power stations to homes, schools and businesses. They study the schools energy bills and identify key data to be inputted into a carbon calculator, to find an energy carbon footprint for the school.

Learning objectives

  • To understand how electricity is distributed from the power station where it is produced, to our homes and businesses.
  • To understand the role that power suppliers have in this process.
  • To look at schools' energy bills and identify how many kWh of energy were used over a predetermined period.
  • To enter data into a carbon calculator and get an energy carbon footprint for the school.
