About Generation Green
British Gas' Generation Green is a practical and innovative schools and education programme dedicated to helping the UK schools community become sustainable by 2020.
Our ambition is to empower teachers to drive real and measurable changes in their schools and communities by providing free teaching resources on sustainability, along with termly prize draws for the chance to win sustainable technologies and pupil-focused educational experiences.
But we don’t want to stop there
Since 2008 British Gas has been working to help schools become more sustainable through Generation Green.
Designed to inspire students, teachers, parents and entire communities up and down the country, the programme has successfully helped tackle green issues and promote sustainability with hundreds of thousands of people nationwide.
Today the British Gas Generation Green programme provides over 11,000 schools with free teaching resources to help teach about saving energy and sustainability. We’re also helping schools to make tangible differences to their energy usage by giving them the advice they need to make practical changes.
On top of that, we’ve been giving away fantastic prizes, from solar panel installations for schools to educational experiences for pupils, each one chosen to inspire green thinking in the next generation.
We’ve recently given away insulation to 75 schools. solar thermal panels to 20 schools and there’s loads more to come. We have other exciting prizes, like solar PV panels, ground source heat pumps and biomass boilers to give away in the new school year.
Our education principles
We passionately believe learning about energy and sustainability should be a fun, enjoyable experience.
By listening to the feedback we’ve received, we’ve discovered the best way we can help teachers is to provide a wide choice of materials.
It’s for this reason we encourage all our teachers to upload your favourite sustainable lesson plans and activities and share your expertise and experiences with teachers nationwide.
We've also provided official Generation Green resources, created by education professionals like you, all designed to achieve the following:
- Tie in with curriculum areas for England, Scotland and Wales
- Promote learning through fun for primary and secondary pupils
- Be relevant, topical and challenging – promoting debate and opinion forming
- Help your school reduce its impact on the environment and save energy
Why is British Gas doing this?
As the UK’s leading energy supplier, we take energy efficiency and sustainability very seriously.
Generation Green is just one way we can help teachers, students, schools and communities save energy (and bills) as well as ensuring we inform the next generation about how we can all reduce our impact on the environment.
Individuals, businesses and community facilities, like schools, are coming under increasing pressure from rising fuel bills and more ambitious emissions targets. We believe Britain’s communities have a vital role to play in revolutionising the way we consume and generate energy.
That’s why, with Generation Green, we’re working to equip schools, students and the wider community with the information, tools and technology they need to make it easier for us all to cut carbon emissions and save money.
