Give your pupils a Rough Guide to Gas

Centrica Storage is pleased to announce the launch of a new resource, aimed at teachers of 9 – 11 year olds, which takes a unique look at the properties of materials, how we find, and store and use natural gas. This aims to improve primary school children’s and understanding of the gas storage and its relationship with science.

A dedicated website has been created in partnership with Children Challenging Industry and University of York, to develop both classroom and web based science resources which are linked to KS2 and part of the national curriculum.

There are practical classroom activities which can be adapted to suit the needs of the children, teachers and the planning requirements of the school. It also provides opportunities for children to explore properties of gases, pipelines and safety issues. The timings for each activity are given as a guide and will vary from class to class. They range in length from 1½ to 2½ hours.

Pupils can also interact with the dedicated website to learn how gas is formed, carry out echo-testing to find gas, build gas pipelines, clean them out and control the flow of gases through them. The website uses storylines based on the work of Centrica Storage, drawing attention to the types of jobs carried out by STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) professionals and apprentices.

Classroom discussions are an important way for the teacher and children to identify understanding of concepts in science, and there are many opportunities provided in the resource for such talks to take place. Discussion tools provided can be used in all areas of the curriculum and some may already be familiar as they formed part of the Literacy Strategy.
