Free Solar Panels for the nation's schools
British Gas has unveiled an unprecedented £15 million investment in solar
technology for the nation's schools. The company will donate and install solar panels
- worth up to £40,000 - in up to 750 schools in the UK. Each school will be
able to generate its own free, green electricity, cutting as much as 20% of its annual
electricity bill.
The schools receiving solar panels will also receive a British Gas smart meter,
offering real time information so pupils can see the difference their solar panels
are making. Finally, specially created Generation Green lesson plans will help teachers
engage their pupils in learning about renewable energy, and schools will be able
to track their performance against others and share tips and advice via a specially
designed website.
Has your school registered for Generation Green?
Generation Green is British Gas's nationwide schools programme designed to empower
teachers, schools and their local communities to tackle climate change through greener
behaviour.
The programme rewards schools for green actions with 'Green Leaves' which are collected
by schools and redeemed against useful prizes ranging from solar water heating kits
and energy efficient light bulbs to green energy trackers.

Frequently asked questions
How will we decide who gets the installation?
We will allocate around half of the 750 solar PV installations to schools in low
income or CESP areas (the government's Community Energy Saving Programme). Parents,
teachers, children and communities can also nominate their schools through British
Gas's Generation Green programme. All schools in Britain, including those not maintained
by their Local Authority, can apply. The independent Energy For Tomorrow fund will
decide on which schools will receive solar panels.
What will the schools receive?
As well as the Solar panels, the schools will also get a smart meter (if they are
customers of British Gas) and an energy display monitor. Combined, this will provide
real time energy usage information to the school and pupils, as well as providing
historic comparisons. This greater understanding of how the schools use energy should
also enable greater energy efficiency.
How much will this cost the schools who apply?
Nothing. The installation of the Solar Panels and the smart meter will be free to
all successful schools.
When will you be fitting the Solar Panels?
We will begin installing Solar Panels during the course of the 2010-2011 academic
year.
